Phuket is one of the last destinations in Thailand I would have thought I would end up in, but alas! It is possible to make the most of this tourist trap: if you plan well, stay away from the tourist beaches of Patong, Karong and Kata, travel on off season if possible, and do some research, you can quite well enjoy what Phuket has to offer.
I have usually been traveling the world solo, but on my Thailand adventure, I was lucky to have company to explore with. Thanks to this different type of traveling, I woke up early every day to take pictures of the sunrise, had a personal chauffeur driving around to all the best lookouts, and most of all, I had great company to share all the experiences with.
In Phuket, we decided to stay away from all the hustle and bustle, so we Airbnb:d a villa in the quiet Southern part, in Chalong Bay. In 4 days, we saw probably 2 other people staying in the same area - another plus of traveling off season! We rented a car, which turned out to be a wise decision as it was pretty much the same price as getting 2 scooters. Besides being safe from the scorching sun, we had the convenience of air-con, good tunes, and all around comfortability and safety over scooters.
In Phuket, one can visit the bustling weekend night market, drive around to different lookouts, go to the mall, chill on the beach; Phuket is a perfect something for everyone-location. The few days we had days went by fast, and our next destination was Phi Phi island.
Phuket is an easy stopover destination for people coming to one (or several) of the magnificent nearby islands: Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Samui, Koh Tao...there's plenty to choose from! You can book just transportation, or choose a package including hotel transfers and accommodation, saving you the hassle of organizing everything yourself. It can be a bit tricky trying to find updated information online, but digging is worth it. Even though we chose to take a package including transportation and a hotel, the whole deal seemed pretty fair, and above all saved a lot of hassle trying to book everything separately.
